How to Use the ASP Wiki Web

syntax (How to format your documents)

Basic Information

Post your article to this wiki:

Locate the page to post your article.

This step is akin to finding the folder to save your file when you save a file on your computer.

  1. Click on your the appropriate page.
  2. Eg. click “At Risk Student Programs” would probably go under UpperClass Support Topics.

Create a page to post your essay.

This step is like creating a new file or document on your computer.

  1. Navigate to the page where you want the link for your article to display.
  2. Click “edit this page” (third tab from the left at the top of the page).
    • If you see “Show Pagesource” instead, you probably need to log in.
    • If you see “Create This Page” it means that you are probably on the wrong page.
  3. Insert your cursor where you want your link to display and hit enter twice.
  4. Type: [[Folder:Subfolder (optional):Article Name]].
    • You can copy and paste this link to the page where you want to post your paper.
    • You will have to replace the generic fields with your specific information.
  5. Click save.
  6. Click on the red link that is your article name.
  7. Click on “Create This Page.”
  8. Type a few words.
  9. Click save.

Type your essay on the wiki.

  1. Navigate to the link for your essay.
  2. Click on that link.
  3. Click “Edit this page” at the top of the screen (third tab from the left).
    • If you see “Create This Page” it means that you have not yet created this page. Just click the link and continue with the directions below.
    • If you see “Show Pagesource” instead, you probably need to log in.
  4. Type your essay into the wiki box (OR copy and paste your text from your word processor).
  5. Click Save.
  6. Click “Edit This Page.”
  7. Click Preview.
  8. Please clean up the formatting on your essay to make it readable.
    1. DO refer to the syntax page for more information about how to format your documents.
    2. DO hit enter TWICE between each paragraph to create paragraphs on the saved page.
    3. Do NOT indent your paragraphs.
    4. Do NOT try to double space your text.
  9. Click save.

Other useful Tips:

Revise your own article:

This step is akin to opening a document and modifying it in a word processor.

  1. Navigate to the wiki page with your article.
  2. Click “edit this page” to the right.
  3. Revise sentences, paragraphs, and more just like you would in any word processor.
  4. Click save.

Posted an article and can't find it?

  • Click here to see what you might have called it. OrphanedPages
  • Scroll down to the bottom, because student essays are toward the bottom.

Review someone else's essay:

  1. Go to the wiki page with the person's essay.
  2. Click “edit this page” to the right.
  3. Insert your comments or revise sentence just like you would in any word processor.
  4. Click Save. (Don't worry about formatting, the author will redo the formatting when s/he revises.

Worried about doing something that will hurt someone else's essay?

  • Hint: Try editing the Playground papers first.
  • Rest Assured: We can always pull up a previous version and eliminate your mistake.

What's the Edit Summary Box For?

The edit summary box allows you to record what you're doing to the article. For example, if you are revising your article to make it better, you could put an edit summary of “major revision.” If you are just checking your essay for minor typographical errors, you would put an edit summary of “spell and grammar checking.” If you are adding in your school's information, you could put, “updating data.” etc.
